Apart from passenger traffic,the Volume of cargo traffic is also increasingly high as all major airlines are calling on this airport. It is a gateway airport for importers and exporters of  South Indian States comprising Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala  and Andhra Pradesh,Government of India is therefore considering granting permission to Chennai airport for break bulk operation as is being done via Mumbai for South Indian States.
